Christian Aid Week 2012

Let's Give The Tools to people in poverty out of poverty
13 – 19 May Christian Aid Week
Christian Aid

seven amazing days of fundraising, action and prayer.

The Mission Committee would like to thank everyone who supported the Christian Aid Appeal
during the week of 13-19 May 2012.
Thanks to you, the total raised by OMC was £1236.83.
This
was made up of:-
Soup lunch - £91.24
Sale of the quiz - £30.00
Retiring collection - £110.00
Cake stall - £72.25
House-to-house collections - £933.34

This total is £109.58 more than we raised in 2011 and, in the present economic climate, we can feel justly pleased with our efforts.
A wonderful contribution to the much needed funds for the
work of Christian Aid, providing the tools to help people in poverty out of poverty.

Scanning the horizon of Bonthe district in Sierra Leone it is difficult to believe that the population struggles to grow or purchase enough food for its families. Fertile arable land stretches before you for 52,000 acres but two in every five children suffer from chronic malnutrition, causing stunted growth and impaired mental development.

Although around half of Sierra Leone’s population depends on agriculture for its livelihood, fewer than five per cent of households have the tools or equipment necessary to improve their harvest, restricting the vast majority to small scale subsistence farming and regular food shortages.

But the commitment of Christian Aid partner the Methodist Church of Sierra Leone (MCSL) and the hard work of the communities it works with, makes real change a possibility. By providing the tools and equipment needed to ensure that the most can be made of the surrounding abundant resources, the harvest will increase and there will be enough to feed families all year round. Excess produce can then be sold and a real difference can be made.

The first £5 million donated to Christian Aid Week will be matched by the Government pound for pound so that more people in communities like Bonthe, in Sierra Leone, can work their way out of poverty.

Thank You for helping to make a difference
