Christmas Angels
‘Knit an angel, attach a gift tag and leave
it for someone to find’.
That’s the idea
behind the Christmas Angels project
which began 2 years ago in the North-East of England.
The aim of the project is to share God’s love and to bless the community
in public places and community spaces with a Christmas message.
It’s for everyone and anyone! In 2014 2,870 angels were distributed just before
Christmas, mainly in the North East.
Last
year 20,586 angels showered further afield as the project grew. You can read about Christmas Angels on their website at www.christmasangel.net
In October 2016 members of Churches Together in Orpington began to knit angels. Each of the 2,800 angels they have knitted is different and each is unique – just as we all are. At church services on 18 December the angels were ‘commissioned’ and bright and early on 19 December knitted angels started to shower on Orpington and district. They found their way to Chelsfield and Orpington Railway Stations; the Walnuts and Leisure Centre; the Nugent Centre; Orpington Hospital; the Caritas Centre; local schools, nurseries and care homes; the Food Bank… and all the way from Green Street Green to Carlton Parade via Tubbenden, Tower Road and Knoll area! Perhaps they found their way to other places too?
Each angel carries a gift tag with a Christmas message and also a plea: ‘Please take me, I’m free!’ Wishing the recipient a Happy Christmas from Churches Together in Orpington, the gift tag also has a hashtag: #xmasangels and the web address www.omc2020.org.uk/cto.htm .
