AND A FUN DAY FOR THE WHOLE CHURCH
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
Once again we would like to thank everyone in the Church and the Uniformed Organisations for all their help in making our 10th VYP Walk a great success. Whether you Marshal, Cater, Bake Cakes, Walk or Sponsor you are all an integral part of this wonderful event.
This year’s facts and figures are: 91Main Walkers, 17 Midi Walkers, 118 Mini Walkers, (226 overall). The top ten comprised of: 1st.Chris Wood, 2nd Angus Challener, 3rd Gary Wood, 4th Matthew Buchanan, 5th Joe Wiggett, 6th Chris Buchanan, Gill Fuller & Nick Fuller, 9th Jamie Swanborough, Steve Swanborough & Jamie Mawson. Congratulations to them all and especially to Chris Wood who was awarded the Martin Friend Trophy for first young walker home for the second year running. Our youngest Mini Walkers at 5 were Matthew Birkenshaw, Tyler Clarke, Sophia Lehane, Samuel Ryan & Daniel Weeks and the youngest Main Walkers at 9 were Patrick Smith, James Davies and James Smith.
This year we did not award many Special VYP Certificates as everything seemed to run too smoothly and there were fewer mishaps than normal. We strongly believe, however, that the real reason is everyone has become more aware they may be singled out for ridicule and have got much better at preventing us finding out about amusing incidents. We did, however, award a special “All Round Good Egg” Certificate to Ruth Barriskill who had been extremely helpful in filling in for Pam Howkins at Checkpoint 2 in Shoreham as well as looking after Aileen Cuckson our VIP visitor throughout the day. The Bananas turned up again this year and had increased in number from two to three – we are looking forward to seeing how big the bunch will get next year.
The Uniform Trophy was won for the fourth year running by the Beavers narrowly beating the 2nd Goddington Brownies with the Cubs in third place. The second Uniform Trophy was awarded to the 2nd Goddington Brownies for making such a wonderful effort in doubling their walkers this year and racing up the leader board.
The Large Spoon was awarded this year to Jane Wells. Jane has been in charge of breakfast for the last few years and has done a magnificent job with her team supplying everyone with the much loved bacon sandwiches (some people I know only participate in the walk for these). She also as soon as she had completed her breakfast tasks joined our new Midi Walk encouraging a couple of her breakfast team to join her. This in addition to the effort needed to make the huge improvement in her units walk participation made us feel she was a very worthy recipient of the Large Spoon.
We were especially pleased this year to be joined by Aileen Cuckson who was one of the team of people who organised the first walk 45 years ago and began the whole VYP project. I believe she thoroughly enjoyed being able to take part in the VYP experience again and even managed to walk to breakfast, which in her late eighties is an achievement that puts some of our younger walkers to shame. We were also delighted she was able to present the spoons and certificates and the Spoon Ceremony.
So far we have had around £5,500 Sponsor Money pledged and hopefully this will mean we can reach the £8,000 target we achieved last year. This money will be divided between The Maypole Project, Children in Crisis and VYP Projects.
One of the hardest jobs we have on the day is sorting out all the spoons at the end of the Walk and this is not always made easy when spoons are handed in without any names. If you think that you have not received the correct spoons or are missing a year bar please contact us and we will try and correct any errors.
So we will end as we started. Thank you to everyone - we couldn’t do it without you!
